How long does it take to create a painting?

Artists Flo de Bretagne is holding a large square painting with lots of colors depicting a modern landscape

Commission piece for a health facility in Texas, 3 months of work

A question I hear a lot is how long it takes to complete a painting. There is actually no simple answer. I'll try to answer with the example of two of my most recent paintings: "Une Danse à Deux" and "The Hedgehog."

A tall painting depicting two cocqs fighting with vivid colors, is hanging next to a wooden table with two glasses of red wine

Une Danse à Deux, 30 x 15 in $1,500. Email me here if interested. I started painting these two colorful roosters maybe two years ago. Then I let them "seat" on the side of my studio. I wanted to deepen my understanding of the subject. I went back to it a few times adding more colors and brush strokes to render the energy. I recently read a book (totally unexpectedly), Roots by Alex Haley which truly gave me the final inspiration to complete my painting. As to my hedgehog I had been thinking about it for several months. It was all in my brain, I could envision it more and more precisely. Until one day when it just became too urgent for me to actually paint it. I put all my other projects on hold and focused on my hedgehog only.

this square painting with very warm and earthy tones depicts a hedgehog with hundreds of quills, surrounded with colorful butterflies

Thank you for reading this article. I hope you enjoyed it and let me know how long you thought it would take me to complete a painting!
